High School Outreach
High School Outreach was started to combat the falling number of Pilipino-Americans continuing onto higher education. PUSO strives to combat high school drop-out rates and inspire the youths of today to pursue higher education through HSO. PUSO brings high school students to the UCI campus and shows srudents what college life is all about as well as encourage and provide them with information about how to get into college. This year will be PUSO’s 14th annual HSO event. HSO was founded in 1996-1997. It began in collaboration with Kababayan with Annalyn Valdez as the first HSO coordinator. In 1999-2000, HSO was only sponsored by PUSO because of funding reasons. During 2005-2006, HSO collaborated with PASS (Pilipino-Americans in Social Sciences) for the one-day conference held in Spring Quarter. On this same year, the long-term program was established where UCI students visit a high school throughout one quarter to tutor them in various academic subjects. Past HSO themes were Finding Your Rhythm: Move to the Beat, The Next UniverCity, Exploring Possibilities and Beyond, Break Through and Succeed, Broaden Your Horizons, Beneath the Surface, Elevate Your Mind, The Next Chapter, Evolution, Crossroads: The Future is Now, Breaking New Ground: Building a Foundation for a Higher Education, and 13th Annual College: Unlocking the Door to a Whole New World.
